Trench Composting

Trench Composting is the simple lazy way to compost! Trench Composting is nothing more than digging a shallow trench in your garden, filling it with left over organic materials, covering the trench and planting over it!

To make your dig a line through your garden, this line should be twelve to fifteen inches deep! You are going to fill your trench with seven to eight inches of compost. Throw in some coffee grounds, orange peels, withering lettuce, kiwi peels and any other organic materials you want to easily get rid of! Fill the rest of your trench in with soil. Plant your garden like you normally would. Dig holes 2 inches deep, plant some seeds, apply water and fertiliser! Within a few months all that organic material you put in the trench will slowly decompose and leave a nice layer of organic material in the perfect spot, in the root zone, of your garden beds.

Put these in your trench:

  • Fall leaves
  • Grass Clippings
  • Vegetable Scraps
  • Fruit Peels
  • Coffee grounds

Keep these out of your trench:

  • Meat
  • Bones
  • Diseased plant material
  • Weeds with seeds
  • Vegetable seeds
  • Wood

Small side note, Trench Composting can continue throughout the winter!
