Growing Kiwi From Seeds

I love nothing more than being able to grow my own food! Nothing kicks up the flavor in your cooking like using fresh fruit and vegetables  picked from your garden! A definite favourite of mine is kiwi, a sweet fruit that is surprisingly easy grow and extremely delicious. Luckily for you, you can buy one kiwi from the store, then never have to buy one ever again. Turns out Growing Kiwi From Seeds is incredibly easy!

First you will need a few things:Growing Kiwi From Seeds

  1. A Kiwi, not just any kiwi; try to get an organic kiwi to minimise the risk of getting bad seeds!
  2. A small mug or container, you will store your seeds here for the first few weeks.
  3. Paper towels, a plate and a clear plastic container.
  4. Potting soil. Try to get a soil with peat and organic fertilisers mixed in.
  5. Containers, make sure they are at least 3-4 inches deeps and have good drainage. Remember these pots are just for starting the seeds, your kiwi plants will need to be re-potted!
  6. Sun or a grow light.

You need to sprout your seeds:

  1. Before you eat your fresh organic kiwi scrape out some seeds and place them into your mug or container.
  2. Add lukewarm water. Place your mug somewhere warm, a window sill with lots of light or even by your computer. Leave the kiwi seeds in the mug until the seed start to split open, this should take about a week. Every other day to prevent nasty bacteria from growing.

Once the seed split open it is time to create a mini green house:

  1. Soak a paper towel in lukewarm water and spread it out over your plate.Sprouting Kiwi Seeds
  2. Spread your split open kiwi seeds around the paper towel.
  3. Cover the seeds with your clear plastic container.
  4. Place your plate in a warn place, again a sunny window sill or by that old noisy computer that always overheats.
  5. Once the kiwi seeds start to sprout it is time to plant them.

Planting your sprouted kiwi seeds

  1. Properly prepare your pot, mix some soil with a little bit of water .
  2. Fill your pot with your moistened soil. Leave about an inch of space in your planter.
  3. Sprinkle your seeds in your pots. Try to keep the seeds a few inches apart.
  4. Put some soil on top of your seeds, no more than an inch.
  5. Keep your kiwi seeds thoroughly watered. I use a spray bottle to moisten the soil without disturbing it.

Maintenance and Care:

  1. Once your kiwi plants start growing keep them properly watered!
  2. Give your kiwi plant lots of sunshine.
  3. Keep your kiwi plant warm, if you feel your house is too cold, keep your kiwi plants in a warm are.
  4. After time the nutrients in potted soil diminishes. Keep fertilisers in mind

This may take a while, you will probably have to keep buying kiwi for a while, but eventually you will be able to eat your own home grown kiwi!
