Bucket Drip Kit – DIY

Bucket Drip KitBucket Drip Kit - DIY

I have recent found Bucket Drip Kit ideas on Pinterest and thought I would share some of my thoughts and my person DIY! A Bucket Drip system is a fairly simple method of making sure your plants are constantly watered, all you have to do is fill the buckets! A Bucket Drip system works similar to this Deep Watering post I made a long time ago.

So take a good look at the picture, you can see that the Bucket Drip Kit consists of a post, two buckets (you can use one or more, depends on your garden size), some irrigation hosing, water and of course a garden! We can not do much without a garden!

So here is my guide for you DIY Bucket Drip Kit.

What you will need:

  • A bucket or two, maybe more up to you
  • A post, fence or anything which you can use to suspend your buckets
  • One Fifty Foot Garden Hose, also depends on the size of your garden
  • A washer or caulking to create a water tight seal
  • A drill, and of course general gardening tools

What you will do:

  • The first is to cut the garden hose in half
  • Drill a hole in the bottom of each bucket large enough for the garden hose to fit through
  • Feed your garden hose through the bucket and seal it with the washer or caulking
  • Hang your buckets from your post, optionally you can place a filter on top of each bucket to prevent bugs or dirt from getting in
  • Throughout your garden dig a small trench making sure to reach a plants roots, but do not disturb the roots
  • Lay your hose through the trenches.
  • Every six to twelve inches of the garden hose which will be buried, drill a hole straight through the garden hose
  • Cover your garden hose with dirt
  • Now fill your buckets with water and watch your garden flourish.

I feel as though this Bucket Drip Kit would be great for a vegetable garden. Each week you can fill your buckets with new water and plant fertiliser! This is what I love about the idea of a Bucket Drip Kit. Your garden can be continuously watered with any combination of water, plant food or any other concoction you can create for your garden.

What size hole to drill in the hoses?

    1. MrCompEng says:

You want the holes be small enough that water does not gush out. I would say smaller than 1/8 inch.

Would soaker hose work for this?

    1. Ken says:

Some will most wont. You are better off getting a hose for a drip system or drilling the holes as suggested here.

Can I put the buckets on the ground?

    1. Dianna says:

I suggest hanging the buckets, this allows gravity to pull the water down into the hoses!
